Nov 11, 6, 1, 40 Northern KY. I just put this in, and now the starter grinds every time you turn the key.
I know this is a stupid problem but i can't put my finger on it. Because every hick in my neighborhood is telling me to shim it, and after you hear it so many times you start to wonder if you're right about it not needing shimmed.
Second, if no shim is needed, WTF is going on? The damn thing worked fine on the so why would it be off now? Just to double check, how many teeth should i have on my flywheel? Starter Shims??????? Well after searching this forum for starter related posts and skiming them I am at a loss. So I crammed a couple washers between the starter and the tranny for a temp fix. Are you wanting to move your starter away from the flex plate: 1 Out away from the flex plate I call it north and south moving it closer to the motor allowing the gear to extend all the way out?
I ended up drilling out the bottom starter hole on the bellhousing making the hole bigger so I could "swivel" or pivot the starter away from the flexplate, then using a nut and bolt to tighten the starter where I wanted it. When the gear is engaged, you should be able to put a paper clip between the starter gear and the flexplate teeth. But if you need to back the starter away from the flexplate north and south Pep Boys sell the starter shims. I am sure that most parts houses would carry them.
Sorry for the short story and good luck! It sounds more like a problem with the reman starter. You should never have to shim a ford starter. The first job I ever had was at a starter rebuilding shop 12 years and we never ever had to shim a Ford starter.
It sounds like the keeper on the shaft at the end of the starter drive may not be doing it's job and could be letting the armature inside the starter slide back and forth allowing the starter drive gear to either stay engaged into the flywheel or possibly just rub against the flyweel.
I think I would take the starter back and ask for another one, especially if the problem just occured after installing this starter.Adopt me bucks
Good luck. Vehicle: 72 ford mav. They sell shims for Fords at most parts houses. I think there is only one size and it is pretty thick. Well thanks guys. I returned my core starter and picked up a shim at the same time. Now all I have to do is find a spare half hour to install the thing. When I finaly got the car up on a lift so I could change the tranny fluid and filter I took off the inspection place and looked up in the direction of the starter and with the gear all the way back I the gear and the flexplate were still meshing.The Jalopy Journal.
My SBC has a gear reduction starter. Starts quickly but as I release the key the Bendix seems to drag on momentarily making ugly sounds. Screech like noise. I've shimmed it several times by diagrams out of rodding magazines, tried the paper clip measurement, I've installed new knurled bolts, shimmed it on the outer edge once, then even equally across both bolts, but it seems I'm missing something here.
My mini starter is the type with the attachment bolts in a straight line but the block is drilled and tapped for both straight and staggered. Can you take it back down and take the drive end apart? Remove the nose and check the bendix, the shaft, the bushing, and possible alignment issues within the starter itself. Part of the problem may be because the aftermarket minis do not have a nose cone which allows the starter gear shaft to flex whereas with the nose cone it's supported. Have you tried a factory mini? Will this add to the noise factor? This thing sounds like it's grinding metal when cranking. Just wondering if shims might help. I've done quite a few starters over the years and never used shims. I think I might have finally met the "Starter From Hell"!! I look forward to your help and advise in this matter. Reasonable rates. BUT you need to check the gear clearance with a wire gauge. If you remove the solenoid you can slide the pinion gear in easy to meet the flywheel teeth.
I hope you are using the correct starter mounting bolts with the knurling that helps the alignment. More often then not a noisey starter is caused by a reman of lower quality. Many times I have had to file or grind off the surface of the starter that meets the block to bring the teeth closer to the flywheel on cheap reman starters.
Not enough clearance needs shims. Mine had too much, it said to cut the shims in half and add that to the outer bolt, it seems to have worked.Alpha kirishima x omega reader heat
Sounds like a couple of junk-yard dogs fighting in a pile of scrap-metal when cranking. Funny thing is that old starter sounded the same, just much louder when cranking. Guess it's time to get under and re-check again. Think IU might also have to maybe get some shims and experiment. Funny, expensive Delco starter came with no shims.

He replaced his starter and it worked fine. It had a slight grinding noise when it started, but its seamed ok for a couple of months. A couple days ago, he calls and is having trouble.

You can see where the flywheel ground some of the nose housing off plus you can see the bendix is also grinding against the flywheel. They sold him a shim and sent him one his way. The shim was too small and he messed with it and cussed at it. Finally he came by and showed me what he had. I have my 68 motor out and happened to have my starter laying nearby. We compared starters. The previous owner had replaced the starter on my rig before he sold it. He never could figure out why it wouldn't start.
I took one look an the cables that had more insulation missing than it had left and suggested that. Anyways, back to the topic.
As we are comparing, I realized my starter is doing the same thing. It hasn't been used as much so its not near as bad but I was curious what starter to use. I am going with an explorer motor and a stock 3 speed manual. The auto starters go deeper so I doubt an explorer starter is the answer. Is the shim really the answer? Its seams kind of odd that ford never used a shim. Is it a production issue with the aftermarket starters or more of a compatibility issue?
Since, I am using an 87 Flywheel, will that year of starter work? I've never had or worked on a old ford that required a shim. The bellhousings are pretty standard as the mounting flange is always the same distance away.

The starter will not engage the flywheel. It is too far away. I had two flywheels. A '76 and a ' I don't know which one Opel machine shop balanced but the 76 starter doesn't work. I went to autozone and got a '70 starter and a ' Aside from some minute differences, the offset is still the same. Essentially I need a starter with a bigger gear on the bendix. How do I get a starter for that tooth count? V8's in F-series came with tooth flywheels which are larger and harder to fit around the firewall. The tooth flywheel from passenger cars is smaller and easier to fit.Analytical research ppt
It is important to check your flywheel and starter for proper engagement before installing the engine. I'm not really sure what you need maybe an expert will chime in here, I seem to remember there only being a few part 's for sbf starters up until the EFI days. On late model 5. Have one person hammer on the starter body while another turns the key to start in order to free a seized starter motor. The gear in the nose of a starter is known as a bendix. The job of the bendix is to eject forward from the starter nose, engage the flywheel and translate the torque from the starter motor to the flywheel. Once the ignition key is turned back to run from the start position, the bendix retracts into the starter. In some cases, the bendix can fail to eject, which prevents the starter from engaging the flywheel.

When the ignition key is turned, the starter can be heard, but the engine will not turn over. This will require replacement of the starter. In certain instances of starter failure, the bendix will fail to retract fully, and the tip will grind against the teeth on the flywheel for a few seconds as the engine runs. Usually, this results in the flywheel knocking the bendix back into the starter body. If a grinding noise is heard directly after start up, the bendix may not be retracting properly, and the starter will need to be replaced.
In certain instances, the bendix will remain partially ejected, and the grinding noise will be continuous as long as the engine is running. Continuing to drive with this issue can lead to flywheel damage, which is far more costly than just replacing a starter.
In extreme cases, the bendix will fail to retract at all after start up. In these instances, as soon as the starter motor is turned off, the bendix will stop turning and lock the engine up, causing the truck to stall. This is definitely a situation where the starter should be replaced immediately.
